Most stations were locally owned rather than being owned by a media conglomerate (as is the case today), and local Program Directors and Disk Jockeys were able to set up their own playlists. As a result, stations didn't all sound the same like they do today. This began to change when Bill Drake established one of, if not "the," first syndicated programming service around 1968. Many stations published their own local weekly surveys, listing the top hits in their coverage area. Rankings were determined through surveys of the local record stores (most of which were independent "mom and pop" operations), by telephone requests, etc. The results of these surveys were most often published as "give-aways" to promote the station and its Disk Joskeys and distributed through the record shops. Printed for the most part on cheap paper, these were considered "throw-aways" as well as give-aways, and not many have survived the years. At present, hobbyists are attempting to collect these surveys and reproduce them online. In most cases the originals have been lost and the surveys reproduced in text form but, occasionally, the originals are reproduced as online .jpg images. We're scouring the web to locate as many surveys as possible that list Orpheus records. Links to those we've found so far are below.
