In 1990, after spending fourteen years in the avant-garde San Francisco
music scene, Orpheus alumnus Stephen Martin returned to his native
Massachusetts. During the years following the 1972 final breakup of Orpheus, the singer-songwriter had shared the stage with Don McLean, the Tubes, Iggy Pop, Livingston Taylor and many others. Looking to fill a "musical vacuum," Martin contacted two old friends: Norman Schell and Bruce MacKay. Norman Schell had been Martin's next-door neighbor back on Worcester's fabled Congress Alley. He had also started out as a singer-songwriter, and been manager of Worcester's premier coffee house, the Y-Not. He founded, wrote for, and fronted popular Vanguard recording group Clean Living (In Heaven There is No Beer). Norman has performed with such greats as Tanya Tucker, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, B.B. King, and Taj Mahal. During Bruce MacKay's diverse musical career, he appeared with the likes of NRBQ, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Koko Taylor, and Earl Scruggs. As producer, Bruce gave this recording a sound and texture all its own. What kind of music did Martin, MacKay & Schell play? With a shrug, Martin calls it "country-blues-rockabilly." You'll have to decide for yourself. Initially issued as an independent cassette release in 1992. Digitally remastered in 2006.
